MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE.

The police force is one of the leading profession in death by suicide in Kenya but this does however not mean that only the police attempt suicide.

The root cause of this problem  has not been addressed by the government and other stakeholders which makes the upward trend in suicide cases worrying.
Most of them attempt suicide due to financial constraints, love wrangles or other forms of stress that might have proven unbearable to them.
Poor working conditions and abnormal working hours coupled with poor pay may be the reason why many police officers have taken their lives and even those around them.
The world health organization (WHO) reports that suicide often happens in times of crisis when a person breaks down his/her ability to deal with stress leading to depression.
It also reports that death by suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for youths between the ages of 19-29 and  mostly in low and middle-income countries.
Mental health of our police officers should be prioritized by the ministry of internal security so as to avert future suicides.
The World bank records that suicide mortality rates in Kenya at 6.1 people in  every 100,000, with men being in the highest risk category, with 9.1 men in every 100,000 affected.
Governmental and non-governmental actors should up their game in dealing with mental health and depression as well as raising the standards of living of the police in order to avert this situation.

  1. Amazing work.. Kenyans have turned a blind eye on what goes on around. Mental health awareness should be prioritized among the people and the police service that is trusted to protect and serve. The pressure to make ends meet has taken a toll on most Kenyans and this has affected our mental health without even noticing it.

You know the most leading factor to why people are committing suicide is that the have problem but they can't share with anyone . The problem grows and it became toxic with the body. When the body can't handle the stress the only option left is suicide 🥺

There is really a need for this to be put into serious consideration. Especially the police officers whose mandate is to protect is as citizens, they need to be at their best mentally without any distractions from their jobs and sole duties they sacrifice to achieve.

  9. Great idea most of the youth and police are largely getting depressed due to the nature of their work its better if they raise voices and speak out early they can be helped again counselors should be incorporated in order to help solve this problem as collective Responsibility.

    1. Really? Just the government? NGO's too could take part in addressing these issues. In most cases it happens because of personal causes not just government related. My opinion that is.

  12. These cases are rampant. It's alarming how civil servants, police officers, are much affected. Some serious attendance to such issues should be considered.

  13. First of all , allow me to appreciate and acknowledge this write up/publication. Good Topic and target population. It should be known that, Nowadays everyone is mentally ill, it just depends/ differs with the degree of the illness. From a professional approach, I have had the opportunity to psychological sessions and mental awareness to various population including the police, who truly as you have stated are more vulnerable to suicidal cases/attempts. I believe the cure/solution to this "silent" killer disease/condition ( Mental processes/conditions with depression being the major) is to embrace and create public awareness of mental health services MOSTLY Psychological services, have discovered that majority of people here in Kenya are yet to discover and embrace psychological counseling services, which can great, so greatly combat the Mental illness conditions, moreso the many suicidal cases/ attempts. In psychology, it's okay not to be okay, so always feel free to seek professional help. Thank you for this publication, Great work.
